-------------------

Initially it was difficult to determine which of the children of John Vine and Sarah born between 1811 and at least 1824 belong to John Vine and Sarah Cuckney and which belong to John Vine and Sarah Cary, both of whom were having children in Wilmington during the said period. The latter couple, John Vine and Sarah Cary, married in Wilmington on 4 Dec 1811. John Vine who married Sarah Cuckney was a farrier / veterinary surgeon; John Vine who married Sarah Cary was a labourer. Both couples had daughters Mary (one christened on 5 Aug 1813, the other on 11 Apr 1814: in the Wilmington parish register the former's father is shown as a farrier, the latter's as a labourer); both had sons John (one christened on 7 May 1820, the other on 7 Jun 1821: in the Wilmington parish register the former's father is shown as a farrier, the latter's as a labourer); in 1824, on 18 January, was christened Walter, son of John Vine and Sarah, and on 24 October was christened Richard, son of John Vine and Sarah. Then there are the other children of John Vine and Sarah: James (1816), Mark (1817), Sarah Ann (1818), Susan (1819), Henry (1822), Frederic Richard (1826), Louisa (1827), and George (1829), who belonged to one or other of the said families. Working out who belongs to which John and Sarah Vine required more research.

As far as the children of John Vine and Sarah Cuckney born after 1811, Sarah Ann Vine can be confirmed as their daughter. At the time of her first marriage in 1843 to James Geddes she stated that her father, John Vine, deceased, had been a farrier by trade. In Jun 1859 Sarah Ann Geddes, by then a widow, was named in her mother's Will. We can also include Henry (1822) and Richard (1824), who were living nextdoor to Wm C Vine and his family in 1841 in Wilmington. Their mother Sarah was staying with William. Richard Vine was born in 1824, and the baptismal register describes his father, John Vine, as a farrier. Hence Walter Vine, born in the same year, was a son of John Vine and Sarah Cary (see below). Richard Vine married in 1845 in Hellingly and emigrated to Australia in 1848.

There is evidence to indicate that John Vine and Sarah Cary and their family moved from Mountain Pin in Wilmington to the neighbouring parish of Jevington sometime between 1829 and 1834. John Vine died there in Feb 1834 aged 52 years. Seven years later, at the time of the 1841 Census, his widow Sarah, then aged 45 years (though more likely closer to 50, see below), was living in Jevington with her children Richard, age 15, Louisa, age 13 and George, age 11. The ages of the children and their order closely match those of Frederic Richard, Louisa and George shown above. A John Vine, aged about 20, was also in Jevington working as an agricultural labourer.

A decade later, when the 1851 Census was taken, Sarah Vine, widow, then aged 59, and a native of Hailsham, was still living in Jevington. With her were son Walter, age 27, born in Wilmington, and his wife Matilda and infant daughter of the same name; Sarah's daughter Louisa, age 25, born in Wilmington, was by then married with a young son Thomas Watson, both of whom were residing with Louisa's mother Sarah. Also residing in Jevington at this time, and living nextdoor to each other, with families of their own, were (brothers) Mark Vine and John Vine.

In 1861 Sarah Vine, widow, by then 68, continued to live in Jevington. No family members were residing with her at this time. John Vine and Mark Vine were still living nextdoor to each other in Jevington with their respective families.

In summary, the children of John Vine and Sarah Cuckney were William Cuckney Vine (1805), Elizabeth Vine (1808), Thomas Porton Vine (1809), Mary Vine (1813), Sarah Ann Vine (1818), John Vine (1820), Henry Vine (1822), and Richard Vine (1824). The children of John Vine and Sarah Cary were Mary Vine (1814), James Vine (1816: father was a labourer), Mark Vine (1817), Susan Vine (father was a labourer), John Vine (1821), Walter Vine (1824), Frederic Richard Vine (1826), Louisa Vine (1827) and George Vine (1829).
