At the time of the 1861 England Census Jesse Bray, aged 33, born in Chipstead Surrey, blacksmith employing 2 men, and wife Mary Bray, aged 33, born in Warbleton Sussex, blacksmith's wife, were living in Hookwood Common, Charlewood Surrey. With them were children (born in Charlwood) Herbert (6), scholar, Emily (5) and Walter (2).

At the time of the 1871 England Census Jesse Bray, aged 43, born in Chipstead Surrey, widower, blacksmith employing 2 lads, was living in Horley Mill Lane, Charlwood Surrey.
