At the time of the 1871 England Census William Cane, aged 19, born in Battle Sussex, shepherd, was with his parents in Hole Farm, Wartling Sussex.

At the time of the 1881 England Census William Cane, aged 30, born in Battle E Sussex, carrier, and wife Sophia (26) of Rotherfield E Sussex, were living in Long House 2, Brightling Sussex. Present were children William Fredk. (6) of Warbleton E Sussex, scholar, Friederic Js (4) of East-Bourn E Sussex, and Albert Chs. (7 months) of Brightling.

At the time of the 1891 England Census William H. Cane, aged 39, born in Battle Sussex, inn keeper & farmer, and wife Sophia A., aged 36, born in Rotherfield Sussex, were living in Thatchers Arms, Burwash Sussex. With them were children Wm. F. (16) of Warbleton, f son, Fredk. J. (14) of Eastbourne, Albert C. (10) of Brightling, George H. (9) of Brightling, Kate M. (6) of Burwash and James S. E. (4) of Burwash.

At the time of the 1901 England Census William H. E. Cane, aged 48, born in Netherfield Sussex, beer seller (own account), and wife Sophia Amm, aged 45, born in Rotherfield Sussex, were living in Thatchers Arms, Burwash Sussex. With them were children (born in Burwash): Kate Mabel (16), mother's help, James S. E. (14), father's help, Annie L. (8), Hilda M. (6), Herbert W. (2) and Minnie 3 mo.).

At the time of the 1911 England Census William Henry Edward Cane, aged 59, born in Battle Sussex, farmer & carrier (own account), and wife of 35 years Sophia Ann, aged 56, born in Rotherfield Sussex (mother of 12 children, 2 deceased), were living in Phoebes Cottages Burwash. With them were children (born in Burwash, single): Annie Lilian Maud (18), kitchen maid, Hilda Margaret (16), farmer's daughter & assistant, Herbert Walter (12), school, and Minnie Gertrude (10), school.

Unable to locate William's year of death. He was living in December 1925 when he bore witness to a domestic case reported in the Sussex Agricultural Express.
