In July 1840 James Cane and his wife Sophia Cane were present at the marriage of James' father to Elizabeth Nightingale* in Sandhurst Kent.

* Elizabeth Nightingale, second wife of James Cane Sr., was an elder sister of Sophia.

At the time of the 1851 England Census James Cane, aged 35, born in Burwash, married, employed on farm, wife Sophia, aged 31, born in Sandhurst Kent, and son James Cane (9m) of Battle Sussex, were with James's parents in Netherfield Place, Battle Sussex.

In 1856 James Cane was co-executor and one of the residuary legatees of his father's Will.

At the time of the 1861 England Census James Cane, aged 44, born in Burwash, farmer of 270 acres employing 4 men & 3 boys, and wife Sophia, aged 38, born in Hawkhurst Kent, were living in Netherfield Place, Battle Sussex. With them were children (born in Battle Sussex): James (10), Emma Sophia (4), John Robert (3), Charles George (10m), mother Elizabeth Cane (61) of Hawkhurst Kent, farmer's widow, and aunt Elizabeth Cane (78) of Burwash, unmarried, farmer's daughter.

At the time of the 1871 England Census James Cane, aged 52, born in Burwash, farmer of 250 acres employing 6 men & 3 boys, and wife Sophia, aged 47, born in Hawkhurst Kent, were living in Hole Farm, Wartling Sussex. With them were children (born in Battle Sussex): William (19), shepherd, Emma (14), scholar, John (11), scholar, and Charles (9), scholar.

At the time of the 1881 England Census James Cane, aged 61, born in Burwash, farmer of 107 acres employing 5 men & 1 boy, and wife Emily, aged 41, born in Lingfield Surrey, were living Farm House, Turnstalls, Mountfield Sussex. With them was James's daughter Emma Cane (23) of Battle.

James Cane of St. Stephen's Tonbridge died aged 62 years (burial record). After the 1861 Census James's age became increasingly unreliable, being understated by more than five years. He was closer to 68 when he died.
