  Research Notes:

In 1816 James Cane, the eldest son, was co-executor and a beneficiary of his father's Will.

Writing his Will in June 1825 Edward Unstead of Heathfield names as a beneficiary his son-in-law James Cane of Burwash, late the husband of his deceased daughter Ruth.

At the time of the 1851 England Census James Cane, aged 60, born in Burwash Sussex, farmer of 280 acres employing 10 labourers, and wife Elizabeth, aged 53, born in Sandhurst Kent, were living in Netherfield Place, Battle Sussex. With them were son James Cane (35) of Burwash, married, employed on farm, daughter-in-law Sophia Cane (31) of Sandhurst, grandson James (9m) of Battle Sussex.

Abstract of the Will of James Cane of Netherfield in the Parish of Battle in the County of Sussex, Farmer, written 18 Jul 1855, proved 4 Feb 1856. 6

Gives & bequeaths all his plate, pictures, prints, jewellery, trinkets, wines, liquors, housekeeping provisions, fuel &c. to his wife Elizabeth. Gives to his wife Elizabeth furniture to the value of £20 during her widowhood. And after her death or second marriage he gives the same to his son James Cane.

Gives & devise to his son James Cane and to John Nightingale of Chiddingstone in co. Kent, farmer, all his real estate in trust, to sell as they see fit, investing the proceeds in government securities or public funds. Out of the interest, dividends and annual proceeds, and from the rents and profits of his real estate, he directs that £25 per annum be paid to his wife Elizabeth during her widowhood.

All the rest & residue of his personal estate he gives to his son James Cane and to John Nightingale, appointing them co-executors of his last will and testament.
