  Research Notes:

While a record of Ellen's birth/christening cannot be found, it appears from the evidence that she was the natural-born daughter of Barbara Adams who later married William Newman. At the time Ellen married to Vincent Vine, she called herself Ellen Newman Adams, daughter of William Newman. William Newman and Barbara Adams had an only daughter, Catherine (b. 1843 in Brighton Sussex), who was present at the marriage of Ellen and Vincent, and who in turn married Albert Beatus Pegler Holmes in 1870. Vincent died in 1867 and in the 1871 England Census widow Helen Vine, a native of Brighton, and her young son William Vine, then aged 6, were staying with Catherine Holmes and her family in Kensington Town, London.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Ellen Nm Vine, age 24, born in Brighton Sussex, wife of Vincent Vine, veterinary surgeon, was living in Street, Wilmington, Sussex. With her were son Lionel Nm Vine (5 mo) of Wilmington, and sister-in-law Betsy Vine (16) of Wilmington, visitor.

At the time of the 1871 England Census Helen Vine, age 34, born in Brighton Sussex, widow, was with her sister Catherine Holmes and her family in 2 Cam Tce Kensington London. With her was son William Vine (6) of Lewes.

At the time of the 1881 England Census Ellen Newman Vine, age 44, born in Brighton, widow, lodging house keeper, was living at 33 Regency Square Brighton Sussex. With her was son William Vine (16) of Lewes, clerk to estate agent.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Ellen N Vine, age 64, born in Brighton, widow, was with her son William Vine and his family at 15 Fairlop Rd., Leyton Essex.

At the time of the 1911 England Census Ellen Newman Vine, age 74, born in Brighton, widow, was with her son William and his family in Gravesend Kent.
