MRS. ALFRED BLACKMAN.

FUNERAL AT CATSFIELD.

BEARERS IN SMOCKS.

Smocked bearers were a feature of the funeral at Catsfield on Monday of Mrs. Alfred Blackman, wife of Mr. Alfred Blackman, J.P., "The Knoll," Baldslow-road, Hastings, who died on Wednesday last week. Mrs. Blackman was a daughter of Mr. John Upfield, engineer and millwright, at Catsfield, who, with her mother and sister, is buried in Catsfield Cemetery, which is also the resting place of the Blackman family. Mr. and Mrs. Blackman were married 49 years ago in the village church, where the funeral service was held.

Mrs. Blackman, who was of a retiring disposition, was loved by all with whom she came in contact, particularly at St. Andrew's Church, where she was an untiring worker.

"Rock of Ages" was sung during the service, and the organist played "O Rest in the Lord" as the cortege left the church.

In addition to relatives and friends from Hastings, Catsfield, Hailsham, Burwash, Heathfield and Tunbridge Wells, the mourners included representatives from Messrs. Upfield and Sons, High-street, and Upfield and Sons (Motors). Mr. Burgoyne and Mr. Howard represented the Hadrian Commemoration Chapter, 2483 Bexhill; Mr. C. R. Honisett, the Battle Lodge of Freemasons; and Mr. R. R. Day, Messrs. Till's, of Battle.

Mr. Alfred Blackman was too ill to be present, as also was his brother, Mr. Henry Blackman, of Laton-road. Mr. T. W. Midmer, husband of Mrs. Midmer, elder daughter of the late Mrs. Blackman, was absent on official duty abroad....
