At the time of the 1861 England Census John Upfield, aged 43, born in Warbleton, widower, millwright, was living at Catsfield Stream, Catsfield Sussex. With him were daughters (born in Warbleton) Emily (13), scholar, Annie (12), scholar, mother Elizabeth Upfield (71) of Warbleton, widow, and sister Hetty Upfield (36) of Warbleton, housekeeper.

At the time of the 1871 England Census John Upfield, aged 53, born in Warbleton, widower, millwright employing 2 men, was living in Catsfield Sussex. With him were daughters (born in Warbleton) Emily (23), Annie J (22), sister Hetty Upfield (46) of Warbleton, dressmaker.

At the time of the 1881 England Census John Upfield, aged 64, born in Warbleton, widower, millwright employing 3 men, was living at Catsfield Stream, Catsfield Sussex. With him were son[-in-law] Alfred Blackman (31) of Catsfield, millwright, daughter Annie J (31) of Warbleton, married, and grandson Henry B Blackman (2) of Catsfield.

At the time of the 1891 England Census John Upfield, aged 73, born in Warbleton, widower, retired millwright, was with his daughter Emily Hobbs and her family at The Stream, Catsfield Sussex.
