Abstract of the Will of Samuel Martin of Herstmonceux in the County of Sussex, Husbandman, written 23 Sep 1721, proved 19 Jan 1722. 3

Gives and bequeaths to his wife Sarah her marriage bond.

Gives and bequeaths £20 to his son Samuel Martin.

Gives and bequeaths £30 to his daughter Elizabeth, to be paid to her when she reaches the age of 21 years. If she dies before then he wills that the said £30 be divided equally between his son Samuel Martin and his daughter Sarah Akehurst now the wife of John Akehurst.

Gives and bequeaths to his said daughter Elizabeth Martin his best feather bed and his clock. He gives the other feather bed to his son Samuel Martin.

Makes John Hammon of Wartling, gent, and John Thatcher* of Warbleton, cordwainer, co-executors of his last will and testament.

An inventory of the goods and chattels of Samuell Marten was taken on 30 Nov 1721 by Thomas Carey** and Thomas Vallence** and valued to £101 8s. 0d.

* John Thatcher was Samuel's brother-in-law: husband of his wife Sarah's sister Elizabeth.

** Thomas Carey married Samuel's widow, Sarah, two months later. Thomas Vallence was the husband of Sarah's sister Mary.

Samuel married Sarah Chapman, daughter of Joseph Chapman and Sarah Bristed, on 10 Feb 1698 in Wartling, Sussex, England. (Sarah Chapman was born about 1680 in Brightling, Sussex, England and was buried on 18 Jan 1762 in Brightling, Sussex, England.)

  Marriage Notes:

Sarah Chapman is incorrectly called 'Joan' Chapman in the bishop's transcripts.
