DEATH OF DR. WEARNE, OF HELSTON.
By the death on Sunday of Dr. Walter Wearne, Helston lost a capable practitioner, and one of the best known and respected of the inhabitants. Dr. Wearne had not long taken his medical degrees when the Franco-Prussian war broke out, and to add to his surgical knowledge and experience, he intended applying to one of the Governments for medical service in the campaign. But his father died somewhat suddenly, and the son came to Helston, and took up the family practice. He was medical officer to Helston Corporation, the dispensary, the Workhouse, and public vaccinator. On the breaking out of the Boer war, he offered to attend gratis the wives and families of the volunteers who went to the front. Dr. Wearne was a great lover of cricket, and rarely missed a match on the Downs if not otherwise engaged. For many years he was president of the Helston Club. At All Saints' Mission Church he will be much missed and for a series of years he was senior warden, and much to make it attractive, and never failed to draw a large congregation. For many successive annual meetings of the Church Missionary Society in the town he took the chair. Dr. Wearne has left a widow, the daughter of the late Mr. W. Mitchell, and a family.
