In 1871 William Carpenter, aged 38, born in Illogan Cornwall, stone mason, and wife Susan Carpenter, aged 37, born in Scilly Isles, were living at 7 Radinnick Street, Penzance, Cornwall. With them were children William H. (14) of Scilly Isles, mason's apprentice, Thomas T. (13) of Scilly Isles, errand boy, Susan (11) of Solva, Pembrokeshire, scholar, Ellen (8) of Penzance, scholar, Matthew (3) of Penzance, scholar, and Clara (2) of Penzance.
William was not with his family at the time of the 1881 Census.
