In 1816 James Crowhurst son of John Crowhurst, bricklayer, and Sarah, was a beneficiary of the Will of James Cruttenden of Bexhill, labourer. James Cruttenden bequeathed him his copyhold tenement with the garden and backside located in little Common in Bexhill, after the death of James Crowhurst's grandmother Mercy, wife of the said James Cruttenden.

Writing his Will in May 1835 John Crowhurst of Bexhill, yeoman, named his son James Crowhurst as a beneficiary.

At the time of the 1851 England Census James Crowhurst, age 45, born in Battle [sic] Sussex, canvass? maker, and wife Elizabeth, age 31, born in Whittam Essex, were living at 3 Hamilton Street, Lambeth St. Mary, London. With them were children Sabina (4) of . . . . . . . Warwickshire, Elizabeth (3) of . . . . . . . Warwickshire, and Louisa (6 mon) of Lambeth Surrey.

James Crowhurst of Lunatic Asylum died aged 46 years (burial record).

The identity of James Crowhurst as the same who lived and died in Lambeth is confirmed by a document entitled "Release of trusts and indemnity to widow of surviving executor," dated 19 Jan 1856, in which the surviving children of John Crowhurst and his wife Sarah, (née Smith) are named along with those who died prior to this date, including among whom was James Crowhurst, buried at St. Mary Lambeth on 11 Jan 1853. 4
