At the time of the 1841 England Census Henry Durrant, aged about 70, ag. lab., and wife Mary, aged about 60, were living in Wish, Eastbourne Sussex. With them was son Alfred Durrant (12*), ag. lab.
* Alfred's given age is incompatible with the age of his parents. Comparing the 1851 Census, it is evident his age should read 21 rather than 12. * There is no parish register entry for the birth/christening of Alfred. In the 1851 Census he gave his birthplace as Chiddingly, and when he married Matilda daughter of William Ellis in Eastbourne a few months after Henry Durrant died his father's name was not provided. This may suggest that Alfred was an adopted child.
