At the time of the 1860 US Federal Census Ann Ray, aged 20, born in England, and husband John Ray, aged 26, born in N.Y., laborer, were living in Coldwater village, Branch, Michigan. With them were son William (1) of Michigan, and [Ann's brother] Robert Shivers (21) of England, laborer.

In 1870 Ann Ray, aged 30, born in England, keeping house, and husband John Ray, aged 36, born in N.Y., moulder, were living in Coldwater, Ward 2, Branch, Michigan. With them were children (born in Michigan): William (12), at home, Charles (10), at home, and Fred (4).

In 1880 Anna Ray, aged 39, born in England, keeping house, and husband John Ray, aged 45, born in N.Y., farmer, were living in Sheridan, Poweshiek, Iowa, USA. With them were son Fred L Ray (14) of Michigan, and Anna's brother Alfred Chivers (32) of England, divorced, farmer.
