NOTED MUSICIANS

TWO BROTHERS DIE WITHIN 24 HOURS

Their deaths occurring within 24 hours of each other, on Wednesday and Thursday, two well-known Falmouth brothers, Messrs. Benjamin and John Hosking, were buried at Falmouth Cemetery, on Sunday. Natives of Falmouth, they lived in the same street, both were in shoemaking and boot-repairing business and both were noted musicians. Mr. Benjamin Hosking, who died on Wednesday, aged 78, at 61, Killigrew-street, had been an invalid for some time. An ardent music-lover, he was a member of the old Rifle Volunteer Band in his younger days and also of the Pendennis Band. He was a keen fancier, and won many prizes at Cornish cage bird shows. His brother, Mr. John Hosking, had also been ill for some time. One of the cleverest instrumentalists in Cornwall, he had been bandmaster of the old Volunteer Band as well as the Pendennis and Baptist bands and the Baptist Orchestra. He composed several marches. For many years he was associated with the old Falmouth Philharmonic Society Orchestra, and was a member of Cornwall Symphony Orchestra. One of the first musicians in the district to take up bassoon playing, he had played the instrument in the Trelawny Dance Band in recent years....
