At the time of the 1881 England Census Emily Dearing, aged 64, born in Hellingly, widow, farmer (of 5 acres), was living in Starnash Hellingly Sussex. With her were son Samuel Dearing (27) of Hellingly, farmer's son, and granddaughter Alice Goldsmith (13) of Hellingly, scholar.

At the time of the 1891 England Census Emily Dearing, aged 74, born in Hellingly, widow, was with her brother William Piper and his family in The White House, Arlington Sussex.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Emily Dearing, aged 84, born in Hellingly, widow, living on her own means, was at 43 Station Rd., Hailsham St. Mary, Sussex.

Emily Dearing of Lindfield died aged 92 years (burial record). Emily's age is overstated by a couple of years. That she was buried in Lindfield points to her having been with her daughter Eliza Fox and her family who were living in Lindfield Common.
