  Research Notes:

S. NEWMAN JOHNSON.

A familiar figure in Mount Isa and Cloncurry in the person of Solicitor Sydney Newman Johnson passed away at Mount Isa suddenly on Saturday last. Deceased had worked in his office on the previous day and later in that evening had prepared a legal document. After breakfast on Saturday, he complained of being tired and lay down on a verandah lounge chair. When Mrs. Johnson came out to speak to him a short time afterwards, she was shocked to find that her husband was in his last sleep.

Deceased was born in Wales 75 years ago and came to 'Australia with his parents as a child. He later returned to London where he was articled to a leading legal firm where he studied law. He first practiced as a solicitor in Swansea, Wales. Returning to Australia in 1900 he came to Charters Towers where his parents resided and after practicing as a solicitor in that mining town, migrated to the west in 1913 where he opened an office in Cloncurry. With the opening of Mount Isa the solicitor expanded his business. In early 1937 he closed the Cloncurry office and settled in the Silver City making that his centre.

Deceased was laid to rest at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, the funeral moving from the Church of England where Bro. Bradford held a short service.

Besides his widow, four sons Alex (Sydney ),Lloyd (Cooroy), Sid and Stan (Julia Creek) and one daughter Mrs. Geo Hirst 'Ilkley', Cloncurry, are left to mourn his passing.." 3
