Western Suburbs Hospital 8 August 1942 — This is my Will in which my wife Vera C. Hely of Richmond a wealthy woman in her own right & who having abandoned me in my sickness must derive no benefit from what I die possessed of. My insurance policies No 933828 with the National Mutual L. A. of Australia & No 8633105 By. N. with the Mutual Life & Citizens Ass. Coy. Ltd. together with any monies on deposit with & war bonds lodged with the Commonwealth bank Strathfield Branch & superannuation deductions & value of leave due to me from the Dept. in which I work are to be equally divided between my brothers John T. & Norman & my sisters Robina G. Brightfield & Alma E. Rake. Any accounts owing by me to be a charge on my estate. My Golf Clubs at present with Strathfield Golf Club to be given to my nephew Beverley Rake. My brother J. T. Hely to be sole executor. C. H.

23rd SEPTEMBER 1942 — ON this date Probate of the last Will and Testament of the abovenamed deceased was granted to JOHN THOMAS HELY (in the said Will called J. T. Hely) the Executor named in the said Will.... TESTATOR died on the 15th day of AUGUST 1942.
ESTATE sworn at the value of £971.18. 6 nett. 10

Among the first to enlist at Goulburn, New South Wales, on August 24, 1914, during World War I; joined as a gunner, 3rd Battalion, first Field Artillery Brigade under Major (later Colonel) G.H. King; an original Anzac; remained at Gallipoli from the landing until November; wounded in the shoulder in 1915; then promoted from sergeant to lieutenant; rejoined unit and then transferred to the 10th Artillery Brigade Headquarters as adjutant to Colonel King; and joined by his brother, Norman; they fought together in France from Ypres to the Somme until Charles was again wounded; taken to 4th London General Hospital; and invalided back to Australia with paralised arm on February 13, 1917; appointed an instructor of the Light Horse at Menangle Park and later an instructor of artillery at Green Hills Military Camp in Liverpool (DA Jan 31, 1917; Aug 8, 1917; and Nov 2, 1918); listed on the Memorial Arch, Wagga Wagga. 6
